The Bullock Cart and the Concorde
Few Singaporeans would have had the experience of travellingin a bullock cart and few would have had the experience of traveling in a supersonic Concorde. However, there is one Singaporean who has experienced both these forms of travel.
In his memoirs “Singapore Story”published in 1998 Mr Lee KuanYew (Prime Minister of Singapore, 1959-1990) mentioned traveling by bullock cart in his childhood days as “hilariously bumpy”.
Later in the same page (Page 32) of his book, Mr Lee commented: “Fifty years later, in 1977, as I travelled from London to New York in three hours, I wondered if any of my fellow passengers had ever experienced the joy of a bullock cart ride”.
