ReTRIeVIA

Did you have a good spell?

Once in a while, a spelling error can make our load a bit lighter. I remember our first Director, Dr Ruth Wong telling a story about a talk she was to give to MOE officials and principals about the need to challenge and re-think assumptions about education.

The title of her talk was aptly entitled, “The Sacred Cows of Education”.

Unfortunately, or fortunately (for re-trievia), the title was typed as “The Scared Cows of Education”.

This spelling error brings up another one concerning the towing of brokendown vehicles. You know the practice of putting up a “ON TOW” sign to signal that a vehicle is being towed? Once I was behind a towed vehicle and had to make sure my eyes were not fooling me because the sign said, “NO TOW”.

Going along in this vein, the omission of a letter in spelling a word can sometimes have less-amusing consequences. There is a story about a tough old ‘battle-scarred’ general suing a newspaper because the newspaper had mis-typed him as a ‘battle-scared’ general.
