Nanyang Gateway Arch (part 1)

Although more than half a century old, the Nanyang Gateway Arch still evokes powerful emotions among Chinese-educated Singaporeans and Malaysians.

Some colleagues have asked me where the Arch is located.

There is a replica of it in the garden in front of the Chinese Heritage Centre on NTU Campus. However, the location of the original arch is outside the campus. It is near the junction of Jurong West St 93 and Upper Jurong Road. Look for HDB Block 980. Opposite HDB Block 980 you can see a Caltex petrol station.

The old Nanyang University Arch is located next to the petrol station. Incidentally, you can buy old postcards of the Arch (not from the petrol station but from souvenir shops). The postcard shows an attap house next to the Arch and some people in white shirt and shorts (the common attire of 50 years ago).

The Arch has the year 1955 at the top. Compare this with a more recent photograph of a NU Alumni gathering reported in the NTU Staff Digest.

  1. Your readers may wish to check out my post about the Nantah Arch <a href=””.

This morning I fetched my daughter to NTU and saw a big group of people posing for photos in front of the iconic Admin building. I happened to have my camera with me and so I took a photo of them. Will put up in my blog later.
