Bullock carts were also used to transport people. Singapore’s most distinguished citizen,
Mr Lee Kuan Yew (Prime Minister of Singapore from 1959 to 1990) mentioned bullock-cart
travel in his autobiography that was published in 1998.

As a child, Mr Lee rode in a bullock cart to his grandfather’s rubber estate via a clay-rutted
track. Travelling by bullock cart was neither comfortable nor fast but it was “hilariously
bumpy” (page 32).

Later in the same page, Mr Lee compared riding in a bullock cart to travelling in a
supersonic Concorde:

“Fifty years later, in 1977, as I travelled in a Concorde from London to New York
in three hours, I wondered if any of my fellow passengers had ever experienced
the joy of a bullock cart ride.”
