From the early days the field in front of City Hall, known as the Padang, was used for sports
and games such as cricket, rugby and football.

To reduce the probability of injury from tripping over uneven ground, heavy rollers were pulled
to level the surface. In those early days machine-driven rollers were not common. So, how
was the ground levelled?

The answer is given in the picture below. City Hall can clearly be seen in the background of
the picture. The stamp shows people playing rugby.
