The first horses were sold in Singapore in 1844. These horses were imported from
Sydney. Up to the 1890s, horse auctions were held in Commercial Square, now
known as Raffles Place.

The two stamps below show horse-drawn carriages in the Padang and Esplanade
area in 1851 and 1905. If you look carefully at the stamp on the right you can
see a man climbing a ladder to light a gas street-lamp.
