Did you know that at one time, horses were used to pull fire engines? This
is shown in the Singapore five-dollar commemorative coin issued in 1988.
This kind of fire engine was used in the late 1800s and early 1900s until
the horses were replaced by motor-driven vehicles.

You can see the fire engine (without the horses, however) in the Civil
Defence Heritage Gallery. This heritage gallery is housed in the Central
Fire Station in Hill Street. The Central Fire Station is an old building and
has been gazetted as a National Monument.
