Colonel William Farquhar (1774 – 1839)

Although Sir Stamford Raffles founded Singapore in 1819, he left the day-to-day development of Singapore from 1819 to 1823 in the hands of William Farquhar.

Before taking charge of Singapore, Farquhar was the commandant of Malacca from 1803 to 1818. While in Malacca he commissioned artists to paint the pictures of native plants and animals that now make up the ‘William Farquhar Collection of Natural History Drawings’.
