Sir Frank Swettenham (1850-1946)

In this stamp the lower picture shows Sir Stamford Raffles. The gentleman in white in the upper picture is Sir Frank Swettenham.

From 1896 to 1901, Swettenham was the first Resident-General of the Federated Malay States (made up of Negri Sembilan, Pahang, Perak and Selangor). After that he became the Governor and Commander-in-Chief of the Straits Settlements (Penang, Malacca and Singapore).

He was one of the few British officials who could speak the Malay language and knew Malay culture and customs. He wrote:

“To begin to understand the Malay, you must live in his country, speak his language, respect his faith, be interested in his interests, humour his prejudices, sympathise with and help him in trouble and share his pleasures and possibly his risks.”

In Singapore there is a road near the Botanic Gardens named after him.
