King George VI (1895-1952): The reluctant King

When King George VI was crowned in 1937, the world was heading for troubling times. Europe was once again tense with the brewing Second World War that would erupt in 1939. In Europe, the major threat came from Germany which started the war by invading Poland.

England was subjected to constant bombing by German planes. Despite that, King George VI and his wife, Queen Elizabeth, refused to flee the country and opted to stay in Buckingham Palace to provide support for the people.

In his later days the king suffered from ill health and developed lung cancer, dying in his sleep in 1952. He was succeeded by his daughter who took the title, Queen Elizabeth II.
