WARTIME LEADERS in SINGAPORE

World War II, which began in Europe in 1940, was a time of great change and difficulty for many countries in Europe and Asia.

Singapore, once regarded as the invincible British “Fortress of the East” and safe from war, was no exception. British forces were busily fighting in Europe; thus Britain could not send extra military resources to protect its colonies in Southeast Asia. Singapore fell to the Japanese in February 1942.

The Japanese Occupation of Singapore lasted from 1942 to 1945. Many old people over the age of 70 years can still recall the many hardships suffered during this period.
